It is advisable to use the lowest possible dose of melatonin with an immediate release formulation for older adults, from 0.3 mg to a maximum of 1 or 2 mg, preferably 1 hour before bed. This best mimics the physiological circadian rhythm of melatonin and avoids long-lasting blood levels above the physiological level.

It has also been shown that higher doses of orally ingested melatonin cause a prolonged increase in melatonin levels.
