A blood, saliva, or urine test can be done to measure your cortisol levels. Depending on the cause, your GP might sometimes arrange a cortisol test, most commonly using a blood test.

What Causes High Urinary Cortisol Levels
Urinary cortisol levels are usually checked in people who are experiencing signs and symptoms related to various health problems related to the endocrine system – pituitary or adrenal gland.
A 24-hour urine sample is taken and analyzed to quantify the concentration of the cortisol present.
Adults – < 100mcg
Teens – 5-55 mcg
Child – 2- 27 mcg
These values are only guidelines and can vary from laboratory to laboratory depending on the measurement used. However, it is important to see the word “NORMAL” in your laboratory report. If there are any abnormalities, you need medical advice.
High levels of cortisol can occur under conditions such as:
- Long-term use of corticosteroids such as dexamethasone, prednisolone, and estrogens or amphetamines.
- Benign tumors of the pituitary and adrenal glands.
- Malignant conditions in the pituitary or adrenal gland or, rarely, lung cancers
- primary or secondary adrenal insufficiency
Other pathological conditions that can lead to increased urinary cortisol levels include:
- Physical or emotional stress

There is a simple at-home test that can be done known as the saliva cortisol test. The test kit has to be ordered.
Saliva for cortisol testing is usually collected by inserting a swab into the mouth and waiting a few minutes while the swab becomes saturated with saliva.
