However, the few times I’ve taken any amount of the supplement, I’ve felt groggy and “hungover” for hours the next morning. My body’s negative reaction to melatonin seems to defeat the purpose of taking it in the first place: to feel more rested during the day. So, I decided melatonin’s not the best sleep aid for me.

Melatonin supplements contain anywhere from 0.5 to 10 milligrams of the hormone. “People often think the more I take, the more effective melatonin will be,” Gradisar observes. Indeed, the Journal of the American Medical Association found that taking more than 5 milligrams of melatonin per day has become more common in this country in the last two decades.
However, both Bonney and Bhopal generally recommend sticking to a lower dose. ” ‘less is more’ when it comes to melatonin, and typically recommend doses of one milligram or less, usually closer to 0.5,” says Bhopal.
“In fact, per the science, the physiological melatonin dosewhat’s in our body under normal circumstancesis only around 0.3 to 0.5 milligrams,” explains Ashley Jordan Ferira, Ph.D., RDN, mbg’s vice president of scientific affairs. “Put in that important context, people are megadosing on melatonin these days. It’s concerning,” she goes onto say.
And she’s not alone in her cautionary posture. “It’s important to remember that melatonin is a hormone, and using any hormone regularly can down-regulate your own production of that hormone,” notes Bonney. This is one reason it’s best to avoid taking high doses of melatoninespecially on a regular basis. Furthermore, “melatonin has the ability to impact other hormones, like estrogen and testosterone,” Ferira adds.
Melatonin And Time Release
Melatonin supplements feature a variety of formulations. These formulations are created to make melatonin more targeted and in tune with your needs. For example, people who experience restless sleep wont take the same type of melatonin supplement as the people experience insomnia or extended sleep deprivation. That is why there are
- Immediate release melatonin supplements these supplements provide a burst of melatonin in your system and can help initiate sleep much faster. These supplements provide a restful sleep and can stay in your system from one to a few hours, providing that the dose you take is between 0.5 and 0.75mg.

Extended-release melatonin mimics the way our bodies naturally release melatonin, so it lasts longer, between 5 and 7 hours approximately. However, the dose for extended-release melatonin is also higher and can go up to 10mg, depending on your condition. People who suffer from chronic insomnia have to take doses higher than 10mg.

How Long Does It Take For Melatonin To Wear Off
Melatonin takes between four to eight hours to wear off, but the amount of melatonin you take can cause this number to vary significantly. Generally, Buenaver suggests taking the lowest dose possible and advises starting at around one to three milligrams.
At a lower dosage, the melatonin will wear off quicker, and youll be less likely to experience any side effects.

If you have a similar reaction to melatonin, how do you find a natural sleep aid that doesn’t make you feel groggy? Axe recommends the following sleep supplements next time you want help catching Z’s.
- Adaptogenic herbs: “Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and kava help your body cope with stress and support your nervous system. They can also lower cortisol release, which is a stress hormone that can disrupt sleep,” says Axe.
- Magnesium: “Magnesium is an electrolyte mineral that can have calming effects and can reduce muscle tension and headaches,” he says.
- CBD or CBN: “CBD oil, made from the hemp plant, is nonpsychoactive but has calming and pain-soothing effects,” says Axe. CBN is a type of cannabinoid that is being used in more sleep supplements since it’s the most sedative compound found in cannabis, according to Sandland Sleep.

Is It Safe To Take Melatonin Every Day
Most doctors and health experts agree that melatonin is safe for use on a regular basis. But large studies havent been done to determine whether melatonin supplements are safe for long-term use.
Its also important to note that melatonin supplements may not be safe for everyone. You shouldnt take melatonin at all if youre pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, its essential to check with your doctor to determine whether its safe.
As a general rule, its best not to rely on melatonin for long-term use. One benefit is that, unlike many sleeping pills, the chances of developing a dependency on melatonin are low, which means you should be able to stop taking it whenever you decide to. In case you end up taking it every night, be sure to stick to a smaller dose to avoid any unwanted side effects, such as vivid dreams, daytime grogginess, and headaches.

If you do decide to take a melatonin pill now and then, the timing of when you take it matters.
“Your body absorbs melatonin fairly rapidly, and its half-life meaning the time it takes for your body to eliminate half of what you took is about 20 to 50 minutes,” says Dr. Ramkissoon.
Since its job is to help promote sleepiness, this means you’ll want to take melatonin about 30 minutes to an hour before you plan to fall asleep.
“What you don’t want to do is take melatonin at bedtime since this can shift when melatonin levels peak and, therefore, also when they fall meaning you could be sleepier later into the morning,” explains Dr. Ramkissoon. “Additionally, taking melatonin later than your planned usual bedtime can throw of your sleep-wake cycle.”
