How Long After Injection Does Testosterone Peak
The testosterone levels of men that receive testosterone shots peak 2 to 3 days after receiving the injections. From that point on, the testosterone levels gradually decrease until its time to receive another injection of testosterone.
The overall improvement of ones testosterone levels, though, gradually increases as more and more injections are given. Again, it takes around 3-6 months of receiving testosterone shots every few weeks for the testosterone replacement therapy to significantly work.
Effect Of Testosterone: Your Feet And Ankles May Swell
Some people notice a little swelling in their feet and ankles because testosterone can encourages your body to hold onto excess fluid, says Dr. Morgentaler.
This isn’t a big deal for most people, he says, and its more common to see it if you’re taking a non-daily treatment like an injection, where you’re getting a higher dose of T in one sitting. You may notice a pound or two of difference on the scale, but it should melt away after a few days.

Why Men Choose Testosterone Shots
Testosterone injections are one of the most common methods of testosterone replacement therapy . As the name implies, these injections are administered to compensate for naturally low levels of testosterone by replacing it with exogenous testosterone.
Low testosterone is a common medical condition amongst men, particularly as they ageand it can happen long before you think of yourself as old. The body reaches peak testosterone levels in the late teenage years, but they dont subsequently drop off a cliff. Rather, they typically drop gradually as you age, although theres no hard and fast rule. For some men, this decline never results in abnormally low testosterone. For others, however, testosterone levels diminish to unhealthy levels.
There is rarely a sudden my testosterone is low moment. Instead, symptoms of low testosterone often emerge little by little over time. One of the most common of these symptoms is low libido. Other symptoms include fatigue, irritability, lack of concentration, depression, changing body composition, sleep disturbances. Some men experience a wide range of symptoms, some experience only a fewand the degree of severity can vary widely. But any of these effects can significantly impact your daily life and spur you to seek treatment.
A 2019 study by The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health surveyed men seeking treatment for low testosterone, and the reasons they laid out for doing so varied greatly:

Treating Low Testosterone Levels In Males

Low testosterone can have negative effects. The symptoms of low testosterone in males include a lower sperm count, a decrease in bone or muscle mass, increased body fat, and erectile dysfunction. Normal total testosterone levels in the bloodstream in healthy adult males are 2801,100 nanograms per deciliter .

How Does It Work
People of all genders produce the hormone testosterone, but your body produces less of it if youre DFAB. Instead, your body produces more estrogen, the hormone that causes secondary sex characteristics associated with traditional femininity, like rounded breasts and hips.
Masculinizing hormone therapy reduces the amount of estrogen your body makes and boosts your testosterone levels high enough to:
- Suppress secondary sex characteristics associated with being AFAB.
- Induce secondary sex characteristics associated with being AMAB.

Months After Starting Trt
At this point, the 3-week break for the prostate scare aside, Ive been doing TRT hormone therapy shots for almost 6 months. I started with 200mg shots which they eventually brought down to 140mg.
Now, after my most recent blood work , they upped the amount of testosterone to 160mg.
Here are my current numbers:

So as you can see, so far my testosterone hormone levels have increased by 89% . But ideally, I would get my normal levels of testosterone up to around 800.
Estrogen levels have decreased by 60%, while my PSA levels have increased by 205%.

But for now, they do not appear to be.

Things You Didnt Expect On Trt
It would be remiss not to disclose some of the things you will experience on TRT that most males arent expecting. Exogenous testosterone is a drug and it can produce some side effects, much like any other drug.
When you start taking exogenous testosterone, your body will decrease its natural production of testosterone. This is due to the negative feedback loop your pituitary gland works through to regulate your production of testosterone.
In healthy individuals, the pituitary will produce luteinizing hormone and signal the testes to produce testosterone to keep levels in adequate range. The pituitary negative feedback loop is much like a shutdown mechanism of your bodys internal testosterone-producing pathway, since youre getting all the testosterone you require through an exogenous source.
Naturally, your body doesnt need to produce testosterone since its essentially being fed with the hormone.
As a side effect of this, your testicles can shrink in size since less LH is being produced . You may also experience a reduction in sperm counts, which can be an issue if youre trying to have children.

Does Trt Cause A High Red Blood Cell Count
Testosterone replacement therapy can sometimes cause an increase in red blood cells.
For me, this has not been an issue. When men have too many red blood cells it can make the blood thicker. To be fair, my red blood cell count has gone up and my blood has gotten a little thicker.
But my levels are still within the normal tolerance. If they get too high, my doctor might prescribe a blood thinner. But so far, 6 months in, that has not been necessary.
Why Does Testosterone Injection Take That Long To Work
There are several dynamic forces at play when a person takes testosterone therapy. The chemical composition of injection, the original testosterone levels, and the general lifestyle of the body are a few important factors. Although the first two factors are constant, any significant change in the daily lifestyle may be a cause of concern.
The testosterone injections need time to work. They cannot bring radical and sweeping changes to the body, mind, and sexual space of the person overnight. They have to first get adjusted to the body and then slowly, they begin to show effects.
Although not directly affecting the performance of the testosterone injections, yet the lifestyle of the person can help to boost its effect on the body and mind. If the patient leads a good lifestyle like sound sleep, healthy food, and exercising regularly, these factors act as a force multiplier and help achieve the results faster.
On the contrary, if the injected person maintains a bad lifestyle such as irregular sleep, junk food, and no exercise, it might derail the course of progress in his body.
It may be noted that the timeframe of changes achieved in a certain number of weeks is relative. This means that there is no hardened rule for a change and it differs from person to person. There may be cases when a person experiences change at a faster pace than his other co-patients who may take longer to see positive results.

Three Weeks After The Treatment Begins
So this is the time where youll probably start to notice some real differences.

A reduction in inflammation typically begins around this third week too, and continuing to lessen throughout the remainder of treatment.
How Does Testosterone Replacement Therapy Work For Women
The best way to find out if you can benefit from Testosterone Replacement Therapy is to get your hormone levels tested.
We would start with a series of blood tests and consultations to determine your symptoms and see if youre a candidate for TRT.
If TRT turned out to be right for you, we would start you on weekly intramuscular injections. The actual methods we use are exactly the same for women as for men.
Obviously, the doses need to be much smaller for womenabout 10% of the amount we give to men generally.
Dosing determines your clinical response, so you want to be able to use the lowest effective dose at the most efficient intervals.
Intramuscular injections, given weekly, are the most efficient way to ensure you receive the precise amount you need.
Testosterone needs to be injected weekly because it degrades in about 7 days and needs to be replaced.
Therapy begins with a dose based on best practices and our clinical experience. Our clinicians will adjust the dose as needed.
Once your symptoms start to respond and lab values support that observation, well know weve found a good maintenance dose for you, assuming your other hormones arent too high or too low.
Blood samples are taken on a regular basis to see how youre progressing. It can sometimes take a few injections before an optimal level is reached.
