Why Melatonin Supplements Are A Bad Idea For Babies

If you are considering giving a child melatonin, again, they need to be at least 3 years old, said Dr. Shalini Paruthi, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Children under age 3 have relatively unformed neurological and endocrine systems, Paruthi said.

The best strategy for young children and infants is to help them to have their own brains produce their own melatonin, Flower said. The best thing is to rely on their own bodies.

Why You Shouldnt Give Your Child Melatonin

  • Why You Shouldnt Give Your Child Melatonin Center
  • Putting your child to sleep may be your favorite routine or your worst nightmare depending on your kids inclination to sleep! Often, you are exhausted, your child refuses to sleep or sleeps fitfully through the night and you are tempted to give them something.

Many parents consider over-the-counter medications to help with their kids 40 winks, but is that really a good idea? Most doctors do not agree, and their reasons are fair! Although doctors prescribe melatonin in kids who have insomnia along with autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder , melatonin should not be used in the following cases:

    • Healthy children without sleep problems to promote restful sleep
    • Teenagers in an attempt to force sleep onset to accommodate early school start times

    Melatonin And Kids With Adhd

Attention deficit hyperactivity is commonly associated with sleep problems, just as sleep problems can cause attentional issues. As many as 70% of children with ADHD may have sleep problems. Sleep problems include difficulty falling asleep, abnormalities in sleep architecture , and daytime sleepiness. Trials of melatonin showed that it helped children with ADHD to fall asleep more quickly, although there was no evidence of improvement in attentional symptoms during the day. Side effects reported included problems with waking up at night and daytime sleepiness in some children. There is a nice review article here.

Before You Give A Child Melatonin Talk To Their Doctor First

5 year old melatonin, is melatonin safe for 4 year olds

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents try melatonin supplements for their children only after talking with a pediatrician. That way, they can investigate whether the child has a medical disorder thats interfering with sleep.

Melatonin may not be the right approach for some underlying sleep problems like sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome, said Dr. Kori Flower, a professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

And it may not be right if the insomnia is caused by an infection or identifiable anxiety, like a looming test at school.

Melatonin For Kids: How To Safely Get Your Child To Sleep

Every parent knows what its like to have a sleepless night because their child just wont sleep. Sometimes, kids just have a hard time falling asleep.

That leads many parents to seek solutions to help their child fall asleep. One increasingly popular thing to do is give kids a sleep aid.

There are several options, but parents often choose melatonin supplements. Thats because melatonin is a natural part of our bodies. Melatonin is a hormone released by our brains when its time to sleep.

The appeal of melatonin is that its a natural supplement, but is it safe to give kids?

Can I Give My Dog Benadryl And Melatonin At The Same Time

Benadryl and melatonin are synergistic in their actions and therefore should not be used together in dogs. Synergy means that when both the drugs are administered together, they augment the action of each other such that the overall effects of the two drugs combined are greater than the sum of individual effects.

This overall effect may be similar to melatonin overdose and could cause side effects consistent with an overdose.

Seek more information about the appropriate drugs to use in conjunction with melatonin when treating your dog.

Melatonin is very much safe for use in the management of anxiety, fear and sleep disorders. The side effects are very rare making it more appropriate and safer than other medications that can be used for similar purposes.

You should always seek expert advice when you are considering the use of melatonin to manage any condition to prevent worsening of any preexisting conditions.

Ideally, it is not advisable to self-diagnose your dog and start administering medications. If your dogs health is worrying you, you should talk to your vet and get expert help.

The prognosis for anxiety, fear and sleeping disorders after treatment with melatonin is usually good. Save your dog from anxiety and fear by choosing the best treatment option for him or her.

    Other Sleep Tips For Parents

While melatonin can be a helpful tool for getting your kids the sleep they need, there are other ways that parents can try to encourage healthy sleep habits.

    • Older children and teens should avoid naps during the day.
    • Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times to help regulate your child’s body clock.
    • Avoid screen time at least an hour before bedtime. The blue light from tablets or monitors can make it harder to fall asleep.
    • Have dinner at least 2 hours before bedtime and avoid food and drinks with caffeine.
    • Make sure bedrooms are quiet and dark.
    • Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature. Bedrooms shouldn’t be kept too warm.
    • Have a soothing bedtime routine to help children wind down before sleep.

If your child has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, call your pediatrician for advice and ask if melatonin supplements might help.

Children With Adhd And/or Autism Spectrum Disorders

Is it safe to give melatonin to my child?

Children with ADHD and/or autism spectrum disorder are known to have challenges falling asleep. Studies with melatonin have been done in these populations of children. Dr. Chen explains,

More trials of melatonin for sleep difficulties have been done in children with ADHD or ASD than studies for typically developing children. Evidence from these trials suggests that melatonin is safe and does shorten the length of time it takes to fall asleep. However, the effects are not generally overwhelming and not every child who takes melatonin shows sleep improvement. The studies mostly evaluate short-term use only.

Most worries about long-term use and safety are speculative but without clarity from research its always best to get kids off melatonin when you can.

Why Is A Good Night’s Sleep Important For Children

Good sleep helps the brain function properly and helps to regulate mood, behavior and emotions. Sleep is important for everyone’s health but it’s especially important for growing and developing kids.

“When children don’t get enough sleep, we see both short- and long-term consequences,” says Dr. Caraballo. “Initially, they may show symptoms similar to ADHD attention issues, hyperactivity and learning difficulties.”

Over the long term, poor sleep habits can lead to:

    • Appetite issues

You Can Encourage The Release Of Natural Melatonin In Your Kid

Melatonin is released by our pineal glands in response to darkness as a part of our circadian rhythm. There are things you can do to help your kids sleep cycle get on track so that natural melatonin gets released at bedtime. Having a dark sleep environment, a consistent bedtime and limiting screens and snacks before bed all naturally promote melatonin and bring on sleep, says McGinn.

These types of sleep practices are called sleep hygieneand Cummings says he would never recommend melatonin as a replacement for these practices. We are in an age where families are often looking for a quick fix, he says. But not everything needs a pill to get better.

If you choose to give your child melatonin to help them sleep, it should be in partnership with other healthy sleep habits. Here are some safe alternatives to melatonin for your child:

    • Routine:Set a routine and stick to it every night.
    • Daytime naps: Keep daytime naps short, especially for older kids.
    • Sleep in bed: Put them to bed while they are awake .
    • No caffeine:The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry advises against children under 12 consuming any caffeine.

Mom Is Giving Her Toddler Melatonin Is This Safe

Dear Amy: Over the last couple of months, a close single-mom friend of mine has very nonchalantly mentioned that shell give her toddler a melatonin supplement before bedtime a few times a month so the toddler wont wake up in the night while my friend is out partying.

In my opinion, using any sort of substance, natural or otherwise, to get your child to sleep simply because you want to go out is horribly selfish and irresponsible on so many levels.

I feel like the adult thing to do would be to talk to my friend about it, but she is having a hard enough time as a single mom and is pretty sensitive.

How do I go about telling her how much this is bothering me without offending her?

Im at the point I dont want to pick up the phone when she calls.

    Appalled & Concerned

Dear Appalled: Regarding the use of melatonin with young children, I shared your question with Dr. Dipesh Navsaria, a pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Navsaria responds: Melatonin plays a role in sleep and is produced by the body there are no clear guidelines for supplemental use in children, but its generally recognized as safe at low doses. Occasional use as a part of treating consistent sleep problems is likely fine, preferably as advised by a health care professional.

Melatonin is not a sedative, so we always emphasize that surroundings amenable to sleep are key when taking supplemental melatonin.

    Side Effects Of Melatonin

Melatonin is considered relatively safe for short-term use and has few risks. However, some children who take melatonin supplements may experience mild symptoms. These symptoms may include bedwetting, drowsiness, headaches, and agitation.

Currently, there is little research on the long-term effects of melatonin use in children. Some experts question if melatonin, because it is a hormone, can affect other hormonal development in adolescents. Further research must be conducted to more clearly understand the long-term effects of melatonin on children.

    Recommended Melatonin Doses For Children

Age 0.5-1 mg of melatonin daily, 30-90 minutes before bed 3-6 mg of melatonin daily, 30-90 minutes before bed

Always talk to your pediatrician about the proper dosage before giving melatonin to your child. This is especially true if your child takes other medications, as melatonins potential interactions with other drugs arent fully understood yet. Melatonin should be taken 30 to 90 minutes before bedtime as part of healthy sleep habits. Melatonin supplements are not sleeping pills and are not a substitute for a good bedtime routine.

Since many pediatric sleep disturbances are behavioral in origin, says Dr. Johnson-Arbor, adherence to good sleep hygiene principles, including use of a regular bedtime schedule and avoiding the use of electronic devices before bed, can also be beneficial in improving childrens sleep quality.

    Practice Good Sleep Hygiene

Proper sleep hygiene can also improve sleep quality and quantity. Research shows that good sleep hygiene alone can eliminate pediatric insomnia in 50% of the instances in which melatonin is suggested for treatment. The combination of sleep hygiene and melatonin is more effective at improving sleep in children than melatonin alone.

A bedtime routine at a consistent time each night provides comfort to help your child fall asleep. Your bedtime routine can include soothing activities such as taking a bath and reading a book or singing lullabies.

Experts also recommend that parents limit their childrens use of electronics in the hours before bedtime. The blue light from devices, such as phones, tablets, TVs, and video game consoles, can delay the onset of natural melatonin release.

    When Should Melatoninnot Be Used

As mentioned above, children lose sleep for many reasons.Avoid melatonin:

    • if the insomnia is situational
    • if the insomnia is short-term
    • if the insomnia is due to an underlying physicalcause
    • if your child is younger than 3

Melatonin should never substitute for healthy sleeppractices: a regular, age-appropriate and consistent bedtime and bedtimeroutine, no caffeine, and no electronics or screens before bedtime.

Melatonin Vapes For Kids : SleepBerry Gummies

Children on melatonin should meet some criteria for insomnia, and in particular for difficulty falling asleep. But they also should have other things ruled out, experts said.

If you are worried about your kids sleep, talk to your pediatrician, said Craig Canapari, M.D., an associate professor of pediatrics at Yale University, director of the Pediatric Sleep Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Melatonin certainly may be on the table for a finite period of time, but you have to look and see is there an underlying problem that is causing your childs insomnia.

For example, melatonin is not appropriate for restless leg syndrome. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institutes of Health say that children should not take melatonin long-term, but neither organization defines what long-term means. Some children naturally fall asleep later than parents might like, but that doesnt mean they need melatonin.
