Some medicines and melatonin can interfere with each other and increase your risk of side effects.
Certain medicines may increase or decrease the drowsy-making effects of melatonin.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking melatonin if you take any of the following:
- antidepressants such as fluvoxamine or imipramine
- blood pressure lowering medicines

What To Do If You Take Too Much Melatonin
So what should you do if you take too much melatonin and start feeling side effects? Well, the good news is they usually disappear on their own:
- If you go back to your typical dose, side effects will likely disappear in a few days.
- If you stop taking melatonin supplements altogether, then recovery is often immediate.
“If you’ve taken too much melatonin, it’s best to wait it out,” says Powers. “Avoid caffeine or other stimulants. In this case, two wrongs don’t make a right. Drinking a relaxing tea and reading a book are good options while you wait.”
If you have a strong sensitivity to melatonin, its side effects may feel distressing. You may want someone to watch over you.
“If someone takes too much melatonin, have a reliable adult stay with the person who took the melatonin until he or she is fully rested and awake. That reliable adult should also awaken the person who took the melatonin every half hour while napping. If the person’s breathing is not normal or if the person will not fully awaken, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department,” says Johnson-Arbor.
How Much Melatonin Should I Take
Melatonin supplements are available in a wide range of dosages, from 1 milligram up to 10 milligrams, and can be taken in pill form, as dissolvable tablets, liquid drops, or even gummies. However you take it, the best time to use melatonin is about 30 minutes before bedtime.
If youve never taken melatonin before, start small and work your way up if needed. For adults, Dr. Kohli recommends beginning with a 1 to 2 milligram dose daily and increasing the dosage by another 1 to 2 milligrams at a time. For children, the AAP says the dose should remain low , capping out at no more than 3 to 6 milligrams of melatonin. The maximum dosage for healthy adults ranges from 5 to 10 milligrams. If that sounds like a wide spectrum of normal, its because the right dose of melatonin is very individualized. According to University of Missouri Health Care neurologist Pradeep Bollu, MD, while some people respond well to 3 milligrams daily, others may need more or less. If you feel like you need more than 5 milligrams, you should talk to your doctor first before trying a higher dose. The more melatonin you take the more likely you are to have side effects. Melatonin dosage is fixed according to age, and does not vary by body weight.

What Is The Right Dosage Of Melatonin: How Much Is Too Much
Knowing how much melatonin to take is tricky, especially since some brands may recommend a dosage thats more than your body actually needs.
As you shop around, youll find that some melatonin supplements contain as much as 5 to 10 milligrams per serving.
Generally speaking, most people produce enough melatonin to sleep well. If you need a little extra to reset your sleep cycle, you probably dont need more than 3 mg. Some people sleep better with as little as 0.3 to 0.5 mg.

Erland reports a review of 31 commercially available melatonin supplements found that actual content varied from -83% +478% and lot to lot variability was as much as 465%. Additionally, 26% of the samples contained serotonin as a contaminant. My recommendation is to purchase physician-only brands. Theyre likely to be higher quality and have higher testing standards than those that arent.

Is It Safe To Take Every Night
While melatonin is considered generally safe for short-term use, like occasional insomnia or getting over jet lag, many people take melatonin every night. I am a member of the U.S. Navy, that being said I have to wake-up at a specific time and be on time always I am wondering if I take a 10mg dose of Melatonin is that going to hinder my ability to wake-up to an alarm, or does that have anything to do with that

I have taken 10mg melatonin before bed and it has worked wonders. If you’re afraid that you won’t get up the next day after taking it, try it out on an evening where you don’t have to be on duty the next day. I have the quick dissolving kind and they work pretty good. I think they are a little more pricey than the regular kind. I feel the effects within 20-30 minutes. I’m sure you’ve been lectured on sleep hygiene previously, but going to bed and getting up at the same time really helps also. Most nights I am in bed by 2100 and up at 0400. Most of the time, I’m up right before the alarm goes off. Hope this helps.
