Are Melatonin Gummies Ever Ok To Give To A Child

Under specific circumstanceslets say youve tried every lifestyle change in the book, from eliminating screens an hour before bed to utilizing a light boxyour childs pediatrician might recommend melatonin. If she does, shell give you a recommended dosage, but Dr. Prince advises starting with the lowest dosage available at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

Dr. Marashi adds that hes reluctant to advise a parent to give their child melatonin because of the very thing its designed to do: make you sleepy. He says that as an adult, you can fully wrap your mind around the effects of the supplement and understand that it will make you tired and the feeling may linger the following morning and into the day. It might also make you irritable because youre extra tired, and these symptoms in combination could make you feel depressed. Kids, however, dont always have the capacity for these feelings.

An adult taking the gummies would have developed an ability to be self-aware and recognize a shift in mood or behavior, Dr. Marashi says. Children might not recognize that they are experiencing a depressive episode, or even be able to know what depression is, which could perpetuate the problem.

What To Consider Before Giving Your Child Melatonin

Before giving a child any sleep aid, it is important to discuss this decision thoroughly with a pediatrician. Childhood sleep problems do not always require treatment with drugs or supplements. Many times, changing bedtime behavior alone is enough. The childs doctor can discuss whether melatonin is appropriate for the situation as well as the supplements risks, benefits, and dosage.

As a dietary supplement, melatonin is not regulated or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As a result, the actual concentration of melatonin contained in different products and formulations varies greatly. The true amount can even be different from the amount listed on the products label. Some experts suggest using pharmaceutical-grade products, which may be more reliable.

Furthermore, what may work for an adult as a sleep aid may not be helpful for a child. One reason for this is that children metabolize medicines and supplements differently than adults.

Many different melatonin products are available to purchase. If a childs doctor approves the use of melatonin, it may be helpful to ask about specific products, as well as the dosage and duration of treatment.

Reputable Sleep Supplements

The safety and efficacy of supplements is not closely monitored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . Shoppers should take additional measures to make sure they are purchasing reputable products.

What Is The Take Home Should My Child Take Melatonin

I have not met a parent who is eager to medicate their child. Such decisions are made with a lot of soul-searching, and frequently after unsuccessful attempts to address sleep problems via behavioral changes. Treatment options are limited. There are no FDA-approved insomnia medications for children except for chloral hydrate which is no longer available. Personally, I use melatonin for children commonly in my practice. It is very helpful for some children and families. I appreciate Dr. Kennaways concerns but I have seen first hand the consequences of poor sleep on children and families. I always investigate to make sure that I am not missing other causes of insomnia . My end goal is always to help a child sleep with a minimum of medications. I know that this is the goal of parents as well. Some children, especially those with autism of developmental issues, will not be able to sleep without medication. So, melatonin may be a good option for your child if:

  • Behavioral changes alone have been ineffective
  • Other medical causes of insomnia have been ruled out
  • Your physician thinks that melatonin is a safe option for your child and is willing to follow his or her insomnia over time

By the way, heres a great article from the Chicago Tribune on alternatives to melatonin.

Melatonin For Children A Guide For Parents

posted on

Pediatricians frequently recommend melatonin for children with sleep problems, or parents might try it themselves. However, the proper use of melatonin is frequently misunderstood. Here is a guide for parents and pediatricians to decide if a child should try it, and to understand how it should be used.

A common thread I find in children coming to Sleep Clinic is that many or all of them have been on melatonin at some point, or are taking it currently. Melatonin is an important tool in the treatment of sleep disorders in children, and because it is naturally derived, there is a widespread perception that it is safe. However, I have become concerned by the frequency of its use, especially in an unsupervised way.

Melatonin sales have doubled in the past ten years, increasing from $90 million in 2007 to $260 million in 2012. Melatonin for children products are being marketed aggressively. I worry that the widespread availability of melatonin has led to some parents using it as a shortcut to good sleep practices. An article in the Wall Street Journal , quoted a fathers review on Amazon:

OK, yes, as parents my wife and I should do a better job starting the bedtime routine earlier, turning off the TV earlier, limiting sweets, etc., etc. Well, for whatever reason, this is not our strong suit. This 1 mg light dosage of melatonin is very helpful winding our kids down and getting them ready for bed.

Melatonin Dosage For Kids

Melatonin comes in liquid, gummies, chewables, capsules, and tablets. Gummies are usually easiest for children to take. But don’t just grab a bottle off the shelf. There are no established guidelines for melatonin dosing for children, so be sure to get a recommendation from your child’s doctor.

Usually, you’ll start with a low dose and work your way up if necessary. The dose amount depends on the type of sleep problem. For a circadian phase delay , beginning doses of 0.2 to 0.5 mg are usually most effective, while for sleep onset insomnia , 1 mg to 3 mg in children and 5 mg in teens are appropriate dosages.

When you give the medication also depends on the sleep problem you’re addressing. If your child has sleep-onset insomnia, it’s recommended that you give them the supplement close to bedtime. If they have a circadian phase delay , your child’s doctor may recommend giving them melatonin one to three hours before bedtime.

If melatonin doesn’t help after your child uses it for a week or so, your child’s provider may suggest increasing the dosage. There’s no official maximum dosage, but most children don’t need more than 6 mg of melatonin, and the maximum dose for children with neurodevelopmental disorders is 10 mg.

There’s also sustained-release melatonin, which your child’s doctor may recommend if your child has difficulty staying asleep. Short-acting melatonin is recommended for children who have trouble falling asleep.

    How Does Melatonin Work

Before you consider bedtime supplements for your kids, you should understand sleep cycles. Here’s how they work: Our brain starts releasing melatonina hormone produced in the pineal glandas it gets dark at night to help us fall asleep. In the morning, when we need to wake up, the melatonin mostly shuts off. Essentially, melatonin works by regulating your circadian rhythm, also known as your “internal clock.”

Supplements contain a synthetic form of natural melatonin, and they usually make kids tired within 30 minutes. They’re available over-the-counter as gummies, pills, liquids, or chewable tablets. Research shows that melatonin supplements can help autistic children, children who have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder , and kids with other neurodevelopmental disorders fall asleep fasterand a few studies have shown similar effects in neurotypical kids.

Kids need plenty of shut-eye to fuel their growth and development, but 15% to 25% of young people have trouble falling and staying asleep, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics . Lack of sleep has plenty of negative consequences, ranging from difficulty concentrating to obesity to crankiness. That’s why some parents are tempted to give their children a sleep supplement like melatonin during restless nights. But is melatonin safe for kids?

In September 2022, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine released guidance saying parents should talk to a health care provider before giving melatonin to kids. That’s partly because melatonin doesn’t have Food and Drug Administration oversight like other medications. “Melatonin content in supplements can vary widely. In one study, melatonin ranged from less than one-half to more than four times the amount stated on the label,” says the AASM report. “The most significant variability in melatonin content was in chewable tabletsthe form children are most likely to use.”
