Normal Estrogen Levels By Age

A Falling Outside The Normal Estradiol Range

Testosterone: a Fountain of Youth for Men?

Numbers dont tell the whole story. If youre experiencing the symptoms of low estradiol, but your numbers dont match up, you may still be a candidate for hormone replacement therapy.

Just like testosterone and other hormones, a level is only low if youre experiencing symptoms.

Similarly, there are men who fall outside the range who nevertheless are asymptomatic. It all depends on you and your body.

If youre experiencing symptoms, youll want to get a blood test to see precisely whats going on. Its possible your levels wont fall outside the normal range, which may indicate something else is causing your symptoms.

  • Fat accumulation

Most of these, especially the symptoms related to how you feel on a daily basis, could appear on a list of either low testosterone or low estrogen symptoms. These are simply symptoms of overall hormone imbalance.

To summarize, you can have low testosterone by itself, or low estrogen by itself, but often, they go hand in hand. The symptoms are very similar, which means that its almost impossible to determine which hormone is insufficient without proper blood testing.

What Role Does Estrogen Play In Reproductive Health For Women Or Dfab

Estrogen, like all hormones, is a chemical messenger. It tells your body when to start and stop processes affecting your sexual and reproductive health. These processes cause important changes in your body.

Estrogen levels rise during puberty. The increase leads to secondary sex characteristics like breasts and changes in overall body composition .

Menstrual cycle

Along with hormones made in your brain and progesterone, estrogen plays an important part in your menstrual cycle. These hormones coexist in a delicate balance to keep your periods regular. Estrogen plays a role in ovulation and thickens the lining of your uterus to prepare it for pregnancy.

Pregnancy & Fertility

Estrogen peaks in the days leading up to ovulation. This is your most fertile period. At the same time, estrogen thins your cervical mucus, a fluid sperm has to swim through to reach and fertilize an egg. These estrogen-induced changes make it easier for you to become pregnant if you have intercourse.

Regardless of where you are in your menstrual cycle, the presence of estrogen makes it more comfortable to have intercourse. It keeps your vaginal walls thick, elastic and lubricated, reducing pain associated with penetrative sex.

The primary estrogen in your body changes from estradiol to estrone during menopause.

Do Estrogen Levels Fall At Menopause

Yes. Estrogen levels fall at menopause. This is a natural transition for all women between ages 40 and 55. The decline in estrogen can happen abruptly in younger women whose ovaries are removed, resulting in so-called surgical menopause.

Perimenopause is the period of transition before menopause. The first natural decline in estrogen levels starts during this phase. Other physiological changes also start. Women going through perimenopause may experience weight gain along with other menopause symptoms. For instance, there may be irregular menstrual periods, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness.

On average, menopause occurs at age 51. When it does, a woman’s body produces less estrogen and progesterone. The drop of estrogen levels at menopause can cause uncomfortable symptoms, including:

Some women experience moodiness. That may or may not be related to the loss of estrogen. Lower levels of estrogen may also increase a woman’s risk for heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and fractures.

Why Are Athletes At Risk For Low Levels Of Estrogen

Women with low body fat often do not produce sufficient amounts of sex hormones. This can be a problem for women such as athletes, models, and gymnasts. It can also be a problem for women with eating disorders. These women can experience a cessation of menstruation, known as amenorrhea. They may also develop osteoporosis — thin bones — and fractures as well as other conditions more common in older women after menopause.

Combined Hormonal Contraception And Estrogen

Signs and symptoms of high and low estrogen levels

These types of contraception contain both estrogen and progestin, in different amounts and ratios. Many combined oral contraceptives contain ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic estrogen. In the United States, ethinyl estradiol doses do not exceed 50mcg , and are often lower, even 10 mcg . When the contraceptive pill is taken as prescribed, it works by disrupting the normal communication between the brain and the ovaries, so that:

  • hormonal fluctuations of the menstrual cycle do not happen

  • follicles are less likely to mature to their final stage, meaning less natural estrogen is produced

  • ovulation does not occur

Because follicle growth and ovulation is stopped, the natural production of estrogen is affected, and may be responsible for any side effects or changes you may experience after starting the pill.

The vaginal ring supplies a much lower dose od ethinyl estradiol of 15 mcg per day , and the patch supplies 20 mcg .

Serum concentrations of E1, E2, progesterone and E1-S in the early follicular phase , late follicular phase , and luteal phase are shown in Fig. 7 and , while serum concentrations of free E1, free E2, 17-OH-P, androstenedione, testosterone, and DHEAS are shown in . In general, all steroid hormones increased significantly from the early follicular phase to the late luteal follicular phase and further on to the luteal phase, during which the post-ovulatory state was confirmed by progesterone concentrations > 10 nmol/L. Furthermore, significantly higher levels were observed for all steroid hormones in the late follicular versus the early follicular phase. Progesterone and 17-OHP were significantly higher in the luteal phase than in the late follicular phase.

What Is High Estrogen In Women

Symptoms of hormone imbalance manifest when certain hormones are over- or under-produced by the body. High estrogen levels are one of the most common hormonal imbalances found in women of childbearing age. Excess estrogen can manifest from a health condition, such as endometriosis or obesity, or in response to certain medications, like antibiotics or hormonal birth control.

Menstrual Cycle And Oral Contraceptive Use

We describe reference ranges according to menstrual cycle day for concentrations of E1, E2, and E1-S determined by LC-MS/MS, and we found low levels of E1, E2, and E1-S in the early follicular phase, which increased in the late follicular phase as expected. Significantly higher E1, E2, and E1-S levels were maintained in the luteal phase. This pattern is in accordance with previous reports using immunoassays however, absolute concentrations may differ. Importantly, our present results are in accordance with reference ranges from the only existing paper on E2 determined by LC-MS/MS across the menstrual cycle . This study exhibits the limitation that we did not collect daily blood samples throughout the menstrual cycle but had to group subjects into early/late proliferative phase and luteal phase, as we only had one blood sample for each woman. Use of oral contraceptives in healthy teenage girls markedly suppressed serum concentrations of total and free E2, as the synthetic ethinyl-estradiol from oral contraceptive does not cross-react in our LC-MS/MS methodology. Lower total and free E2 in oral contraceptive users are also seen in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in whom oral contraceptive are used to reduce free androgens by increasing SHBG levels and inhibiting ovarian steroid synthesis. In order to interpret results correctly, it is therefore important to know if a woman is using oral contraceptive or not to interpret results correctly.

While there is a large focus on high estrogen, it is important to note that it is also possible for estrogen levels to decline too much. In this case, many men wont actually experience any serious symptoms.

There are situations where men experience symptoms similar to high estrogen in this particular case. This usually signals situations where a man has an underlying condition that affects hormone production, such as hypogonadism, which impacts serum testosterone production.

Low testosterone in men can cause numerous symptoms. Testosterone deficiency can contribute to depression, erectile dysfunction, and more.

What Does It Mean To Have Low Estrogen

Estrogen is an important hormone that spurs your sexual development and helps maintain your reproductive system. It plays an essential role in other body systems, too. Estrogen levels rise and fall throughout your life, often in sync with other hormones that control important body processes, like your menstrual cycle. The ever-changing highs and lows associated with estrogen levels are normal.

Having estrogen levels that are consistently low is different. Consistently low estrogen may mean that youre going through a natural change, like menopause. Sometimes, low estrogen is a sign of a condition that slows your sexual development, which can make it harder to become pregnant.

What Happens When Testosterone Levels Rise Or Fall

If your body produces too much testosterone, you may have irregular or absent menstrual periods. You may also have more body hair than the average woman. Some women with high testosterone levels develop frontal balding. Other possible effects include acne, an enlarged clitoris, increased muscle mass, and deepening of voice.

High levels of testosterone can also lead to infertility and are commonly seen in polycystic ovarian syndrome . PCOS is an endocrine condition that is sometimes seen in women of childbearing age who have difficulty getting pregnant. Women with PCOS have symptoms similar to those produced by high testosterone levels. They include:

As women with PCOS age, the presence of these risk factors increases their risk for heart disease.

By the time of menopause, women have experienced a decline in testosterone since their 20âs that does not decrease further.â That decline may be correlated to a reduced libido. Some findings indicate that testosterone replacement therapy may benefit sexual function in certain perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Testosterone replacement is unadvised in women with breast or uterine cancer. It also may increase the chances of cardiovascular disease or liver disease. So, experts are cautious about recommendations.

Understanding The Different Types Of Estrogen

Estrogen is a group of hormones that are created in the ovaries and the pituitary gland. All estrogen hormones occupy the same estrogen receptor sites. Estradiol is the most potent and is converted to the weaker estrone, and then to estriol when levels of progesterone rise. This family of types of estrogen works in concert with progesterone to nourish and support the growth and regeneration of the female reproductive tissues, breasts and distribution of body fat.

What Causes Low Estrogen

There are multiple possibilities as to why this hormone might be low. To begin to answer this, we need to know a little bit about how it is produced.

How Do You Make Estrogen?

The immediate building block to making estrogen is testosterone. So an obvious reason for low levels would be low testosterone. Then we have to determine what causes low testosterone. Half of your testosterone is produced in your ovaries. The other half comes from your adrenal glands or stress glands. This means that if testosterone is low, there is a 50% chance that it is because your adrenal glands are not producing their share. There are a number of means of supporting healthy adrenal gland function so that they better support the ovaries in making estrogen.

How Does Your Thyroid Affect Estrogen?

Another reason for low estrogen can be that your thyroid is underactive. The entire hormone-producing system works together. If your thyroid is underactive, everything in your body can run just a bit slower than it should. Supporting healthy thyroid function can help if this is the cause.

How Do the Other Hormones Affect Estrogen?

A third reason for it to be low is that there may be an excess of another hormone that is suppressing its production. For example, high levels of prolactin can suppress the ovaries. In this case, we need to investigate which hormone may be causing the suppression and address the cause of that.

Low Estrogen Levels And Weight Gain: Is There A Connection

Sex hormones, such as estrogen, influence the amount of fat in the body. Estrogen regulates glucose and lipid metabolism. If your estrogen levels are low, it can result in weight gain.

Research suggests that this may be why women approaching menopause are likely to become overweight. Being overweight can increase your risk for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

If your estrogen levels are low and its affecting your weight, speak with your doctor. They can assess your symptoms and advise you on next steps. Its always a good idea to try to eat a balanced diet and exercise as often as possible. Talk with your doctor about developing a diet and exercise plan thats right for you.

How Can I Prevent Low Estrogen Levels

You cant avoid drops in estrogen associated with getting older. You can put healthy habits into place that lead to overall balance in your life including more balanced hormones. These changes dont always require hormone therapy. For instance, exercising in moderation and meditation can help with sleep disturbances and fatigue associated with low estrogen. Getting enough calories and the right kinds of nutrients can improve every aspect of your health. Using a lubricant can make sex more pleasurable.

Depending on whats causing your low levels and the severity of your symptoms, you may need medicine to help. Speak with your provider about your options.

Testosterone Levels In Men By Age

It is a fact that testosterone levels in men fall as they age, often at the point in life when a man most needs to maintain a steady supply of this vital hormone. This decline typically occurs at some time after a male turns thirty, with a continued decrease of about 1 to 2 percent each year that follows.

Although such a slight reduction in the secretion of testosterone probably does not seem like much at this point, after ten years of a 2% drop every twelve months, a man could find that his production of testosterone is down 20 percent. Now that can make a tremendous adverse impact on his overall well-being quality of life.

Free testosterone that which is not bound in the bloodstream to SHBG levels have been shown to decline faster than total testosterone. A comparison of testosterone levels for males in the chart to the right displays a decrease of about 30% of total testosterone in healthy men between 25 and 75 years of age compared to 50% for free testosterone.

Estrogen is a natural hormone that is considered the main sex hormone in the female body.

Even though the hormone is generally associated with women, it is important to understand that estrogen also plays a role in the male body.

The main difference is that the level of estrogen in the male body is significantly lower compared to a female body.

In some cases, estrogen levels may be altered in the male body, which could lead to the hormone being too abundant or too low.

In this post, we take a closer look at what normal estrogen levels for men are. We also consider symptoms of low and high estrogen in the male body and introduce some potential natural remedies to restore a normal level of the hormone.

What Tests Will Be Done To Diagnose Low Estrogen

There are three types of estrogen that your body makes. An estrogen test can measure all three: estrone , estradiol and estriol . Your provider will do a simple blood draw and send it to a lab for analysis.

  • Estrone is the primary hormone your body produces during menopause and postmenopause. Its a weaker form of estrogen than estradiol .
  • Estradiol is the primary hormone your body produces in your reproductive years.
  • Estriol is the primary hormone your body makes during pregnancy.

Estrogen can be assessed when your provider is unsure about the status of your hormones . That being said, only a couple of conditions are FDA-approved for hormone replacement therapy.

Normal Estrogen Levels Decline During Menopause & Perimenopause

Estrogen levels under 100 pg/ml can be associated with hot flashes, and can signal aspects of perimenopause. During perimenopause there are no normal estrogen levels as it starts to decline in an irregular fashion and in some women there can actually be more estrogen produced than in the past.

In menopause, estrogen plummets and skyrockets in a rollercoaster fashion and after about a year eventually levels off at a lower more stable level signaling the start of postmenopause. .

Diagnosing High Or Low Estrogen

A doctor will have you take a laboratory blood test if they believe you may have either high or low levels of estrogen.

For this, youll go to a laboratory that collects samples, and someone whos trained to take samples will use a needle and vial to collect the blood for testing.

You should receive your results in about a week. Youll see your blood estrogen levels shown in measurements of picograms per milliliter . Once you get your results, your doctor will let you know what youll need to do next.

If theyre normal, you wont necessarily need to do anything. But if your levels or high or low, your doctor will recommend the next steps to help get your estrogen levels balanced.

Here are some of the possible treatments a doctor may recommend to help control your estrogen levels.
