Over The Counter Estrogen Cream

New Zealand Germany And Others

How do I Choose the Best over The Counter Estrogen Products

Importing HRT in New Zealand for personal use is restricted. You will be unable to self-medicate while living in NZ. You *can* order HRT, but you need to prove that you have a prescription for it.

See: . Click on the section that says Prescription medicines.

It might still be possible to self-medicate in New Zealand. TODO: research ways of doing this

Citizens of NZ should campaign for a change in the law, so that importing HRT without a prescription becomes allowed, and so that GPs prescribe HRT on an informed consent basis, without gatekeeping.

The same is true in Germany and many other countries.

It might still be possible to import, even with restrictions. Customs is less efficient, depending on your location, and might not even check your package. Order smaller quantities e.g. 1.5 month supply, and make sure to always order the next 1.5 month supply a few weeks before your current supply will run out. You can ask your supplier to package it as discretely as possible, and use a generic description on the package contents when shipping . QHI is good at that, but inhouse might be too .

Are There Real Benefits Of Natural Estrogen Cream

One popular way of treating low estrogen is withover-the-counter natural estrogen creams. These creams are easily accessibleand relatively affordable. Many women also find the idea of a natural hormoneproduct to be appealing and erroneously believe it speaks to the productssafety. But these creams are not the best method for alleviating the symptomsof low estrogen.

The natural estrogen creams you can buy over the counter are not subject to the rigorous standards to which prescription medications are held. In fact, there is little regulation of any kind on these OTC products, which means that their efficacy and safety are not guaranteed. Because your treatment is not guided by a medical professional, you dont know that the product you choose is the right one for youthe cream you pick up may not contain the right amount of hormones or even the right hormones. DIY product selection and administration could lead to over or under-dosage, which can either lead to ineffective treatment or distressing side effectsor both. Overall, there are few benefits of natural estrogen creams available over the counter and, in fact, there may be significant risks, as hormone therapy in general and estrogen-only therapy specifically isnt safe for all women. But there is a better way.

Do Alternative Remedies Help With Menopause Symptoms

Studies into natural treatments for menopause symptoms have had mixed results. Some have shown that soy helps with hot flashes and night sweats but might be dangerous for women at risk for hormone-related cancers of the breast, ovaries and uterus. Black cohosh may help some women control hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and insomnia but again, research has been mixed, and some reports have linked black cohosh to liver problems.

Other natural remedies include chasteberry, red clover, dong quai, kava, and evening primrose oil. Your doctor can help you decide whether any alternative treatments are right for you.

When Will Generic Premarin Be Available

Premarins patent protection expired in 2012, so other manufacturers are technically allowed to create generics with the same active ingredients, but none have been approved. Why? The answer lies in how Premarin is made.

The estrogens in Premarin come fromwait for itthe urine of pregnant mares. Since Premarin comes from horse urine, the exact ingredients have not been defined, and the FDA will not approve a synthetic version. Moral of the story: We may never see a Premarin generic.

Don’t Miss: Can Hormone Imbalance Cause Nausea

Lets Understand Estrogen Dominance First

It can happen due to two main reasons:

Reason #1: You have insufficient progesterone to oppose estradiol, the aggressive estrogen that has been connected to the growth of pathogenic cells like in the case of fibroids, cancers, and endometrial tissue.

Reason #2: The way your body is breaking down estrogens to the various estrogenic metabolites, is not favorable to you. I call them the dirty estrogens.

Due to a poor liver function, inappropriate diet, nutritional deficiencies, gut issues, chronic constipation, and use of conventional skincare and cleaning products, your body is receiving and/or creating too much of the antagonistic or dirty estrogen metabolites that cause harm.

Prescription Menopause Relief Delivered

Healthcare providers can prescribe Hormone Replacement Therapy or natural estrogen cream as a natural remedy for all of the symptoms, particularly vaginal dryness, and hot flashes. HRT is far superior to the home remedies that are sometimes used to relieve menopause symptoms. Not only is HRT safer and more effective, but it also has many benefits both long and short term.

Unfortunately, many women try a quick fix like over-the-counter natural estrogen cream or herbs for relief. Typically OTC is inexpensive, fast, and easy to access, but the true benefits of OTC natural estrogen creams are not scientifically proven, and there is little evidence to suggest that they have any real benefit.

Prescription vs. Non-prescription Natural Estrogen Creams

Estrogen is the hormone that most people talk about when they are discussing menopause. Best known for its role in reproduction and the menstrual cycle, estrogen also helps regulate mood, cardiovascular health, bone density, and the look and feel of your skin. HRT made by Winona is made from yams, provides the estrogen that your body is making less of during menopause, and is considered to be natural.

But lets be clear about what natural means. Estrogens produced within the body are called endogenous estrogens, while estrogens that are given as a medication or treatment are called exogenous or synthetic estrogen. Estrogen that is made or altered in the lab is synthetic, and that includes OTC products.1

Non-hormonal options are preferred for women at high risk for breast cancer, blood clots, stroke, or liver disease.

May Play A Role In Fighting Depression

The relationship between DHEA and depression is complex.

Some research in women nearing menopause showed that women with depression had higher levels of this hormone than those without depression (

Some researchers even caution against the use of it, as higher levels of DHEA in the body have been associated with increased symptoms of depression in middle-aged women .

Overall, more information is needed before DHEA can be recommended for treating depression.

Summary: There may be a relationship between DHEA levels in the body and depression. Taking it to combat depression is not recommended until more information is available.

Alternatives To Prescription Estrogen Cream

Is there an alternative to Premarin vaginal cream? It has helped eliminate frequent bladder irritation/infection after sex, but I would prefer to use something else.

Andrew Weil, M.D. |March 26, 2002

Revised 11/24/2009

Premarin vaginal cream is a prescription product designed for women whose estrogen levels are low, as they are after menopause. Im assuming that your bladder irritation and infections stem from post-menopausal vaginal dryness, a common cause of these problems. You could try cutting back on the dosage if youre concerned about reliance on the drug, but there are alternatives you can explore.

My colleague Ann L. Mattson, MD, medical director of the Boulder Valley Womens Health Center in Colorado and an associate fellow at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine here at the University of Arizona, suggests the following non-prescription options which she says have been shown to be helpful in reducing the vaginal dryness that occurs with menopause and should indirectly improve bladder symptoms associated with intercourse:

You can also minimize the chances of developing bladder problems by emptying your bladder before and after intercourse. To reduce the risk of recurrent bladder infections, increase your water intake and drink three ounces of cranberry juice per day or take one 500mg tablet of cranberry juice supplement daily.
