Walnuts And Estrogen Positive Breast Cancer

Load Up On Fruits And Vegetables

Study: Walnuts may improve breast cancer treatment outcomes

The fiber, antioxidants and other phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables have the potential to reduce cancer growth, although research results have been mixed on their role in breast cancer. In fact, data from the Womenâs Healthy Eating and Living trial, a study of more than 3,000 women with a history of early-stage breast cancer, failed to show a diet rich in these foods reduced the rate of recurrence.

However, data from the Womenâs Health Observational Study , a trial of nearly 94,000 postmenopausal women with a history of early-stage breast cancer, linked a higher intake of carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables, such as leafy greens, carrots, sweet potatoes and nectarines, to a lower recurrence of ER-positive breast cancer.

In addition, a 2008 study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology of nearly 1,500 women with early-stage breast cancer found those who ate at least five daily servings of fruits and vegetables â and exercised 30 minutes daily â cut their risk of death in half over a 10-year period. This benefit was greatest among women with ER-positive breast cancer.

Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can do more than cut cancer risk. A plant-centered, high-fiber diet can also reduce the risk of other health problems that breast cancer patients may face, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. Consequently, women with breast cancer are encouraged to include a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables in their daily diets.

How Can I Improve My Immune System

Following a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help make sure your body is strong enough for treatment.

The following are other ways to support your body and immune system:

  • Avoiding smoking or other tobacco use.
  • Getting enough sleep.
  • Managing your blood pressure.
  • Washing your hands properly.

During chemotherapy treatment, its important to follow food safety precautions, such as cooking meats thoroughly and avoiding unpasteurized foods. This will help your body if your immune system cant fight off infections as well as it should.

Are Soy And Flaxseeds Ok

Soy contains phytoestrogens, or plant-based estrogens, which has raised concerns regarding soy’s role in the development of breast cancer however, whole soy products, such as tofu, edamame or soy milk, have been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer, including ER-positive cancers. This plant protein is also considered a healthy choice for breast cancer survivors.

In fact, a 2010 study from JAMA of more than 5,000 women living in China linked regular, whole soy intake to a reduced recurrence of all breast cancer types. However, isolated soy â found in supplements, soy powder or processed foods â should not be emphasized, as these foods have not been shown to be protective.

Flaxseeds are rich in lignans, a phytoestrogen, and also a good source of omega-3 fats and dietary fiber. Animal studies have shown that components of flaxseed can reduce tumor size and inhibit the growth of ER-positive and ER-negative breast cancer cells and that foods that contain lignan, such as flaxseed, may help decrease breast cancer risk, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Although incorporating small amounts of flaxseed into a healthy diet is encouraged, inadequate human research is available to recommend large amounts of flaxseed, or flaxseed supplements, as a therapy for breast cancer.

Maintaining A Healthy Weight

Being overweight or obese affects breast cancer risk differently before and after menopause.

  • Before menopause, women who are overweight or obese have a modestly decreased risk of breast cancer .
  • After menopause, women who are overweight or obese have an increased risk of breast cancer .

Although women who are overweight or obese may have a lower risk of breast cancer before menopause, weight gain should be avoided. Women who gain weight in adulthood have an increased risk of breast cancer before and after menopause .

Most breast cancers occur after menopause. Any weight you gain before menopause you may carry into your postmenopausal years, so its important to maintain a healthy weight throughout your life.

Potential Synergy Of Nut Phytochemicals

The use of bioactive compounds in cancer prevention and treatment has attracted increasing attention in recent years . Although extensively studied, the precise mechanism of action of most of them has not been completely elucidated yet. It is also important to underline that bioactive compounds are usually present in food at lower concentrations than those used in in vitro studies and reported to be effective. This observation may raise doubts about the effectiveness of a diet enriched in foods containing these compounds in cancer therapy. Some concerns also come from their actual bioavailability and bioactivity. In this respect, the possibility to enhance their activity by combining different compounds or, more importantly, by using specific foods that already contain a combination of these compounds, is very intriguing . It is worth mentioning that, although phytochemicals have been demonstrated to possess preventive effects on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic conditions , studies on single compounds have not reached the same positive results . This leads to the hypothesis that the protective effect could be because of a synergistic action of phytochemicals combinations normally found in these foods .

Anticancer Properties Of Nut Phytochemicals

Over the last 20 years, epidemiological studies have indicated an inverse relationship between diet and development of cancer with a regular intake of fruits and vegetables clearly associated with a decreased risk of the disease. As a result, there has been a huge interest in studying the components responsible for this chemopreventive activity, which has led to the identification of several phytochemicals or bioactive compounds with different chemical structures and functions . Bioactive compounds or nutraceuticals are extranutritional constituents that typically occur in small quantities in food and are associated with beneficial effects on health . Nuts contain many bioactive compounds that have been found to affect several cellular processes involved in tumor development and progression, including cell survival, cell proliferation, cell invasion, and angiogenesis and therefore can account for the anticancer properties of nuts. A few representative examples of some of these compounds, some of their anticancer activities and mechanisms of actions are listed in .

Polyphenols.

Carotenoids.

Carotenoids are naturally occurring fat-soluble pigments belonging to the group of tetraterpenes. Although they are present only in small amounts in nuts, it has been proposed that they can exert anticancer properties because of their antioxidant effect or, as in the case of lycopene, their direct effect on cancer cells .

Phytosterols.

Phytoestrogens.

Diet Fiber.

Eating Walnuts May Help Breast Cancer Patients

Understanding Estrogen Receptor-Positive (ER+) Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC)

– April 01, 2019

New research shows walnuts could help women who are dealing with breast cancer. The study, conducted at Marshall University, shows eating two ounces of walnuts a day for about two weeks slowed breast cancer growth or reduced the risk of developing the disease.

Nut intake, including walnuts, has been associated with a lower risk of Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk, said Shelley Tworoger, Ph.D., associate center director for Population Science at Moffitt Cancer Center. Recent studies trying to understand this association have suggested that eating nuts, particularly when eaten in place of red or processed meat or refined grains, can lower inflammation in the body. High inflammation is associated with cancer risk, including breast cancer.

As part of the study, a group of women ate two ounces of walnuts per day immediately following a biopsy and until surgery about two weeks later. Researchers found significant changes in the tumors gene expression in the women who ate the nuts, compared to those who didnt.

Other studies have shown the Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil and extra nuts could lower the risk of breast cancer compared to a normal diet. Last year, a study from Yale showed colon cancer survivors who regularly eat nuts have a significantly lower risk for cancer recurrence.

You should avoid eating nuts if you have any nut allergies.

Blueberries And Other Deep

Berries are rich in antioxidants and contain anti-inflammatory properties, and the most powerful berry to fight against breast cancer is blueberries. Blueberries improve brain and heart health as well as reduce cancer risk and are high in fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and flavonols, which are helpful compounds that work to detox the body from pollutants and cellular damage from free radicals.

Studies show that phytochemicals and nutrients increase antioxidant activity in the blood and help your body repair cell damage that can lead to cancer growth as well as prevent DNA damage on a cellular level. Eating berries and deep-hued fruits and vegetables every day help your body stay on top of the cellular damage caused by the stress of oxidization that comes from toxins in the environment or the food we eat.

Dos And Donts For Estrogen

Breast cancer is not just one disease it comes in many variations.

One of the primary factors in determining the type of breast cancer is the sensitivity of the tumor cells to estrogen. If a breast tumor is hormone-sensitive or estrogen receptor-positive, it means there are specific estrogen receptors on the tumor cells, and when estrogen binds with these receptors, it transfers a message to the cancer cells. Like a lock and key effect, the breast tumor cells are stimulated by estrogen to grow and reproduce. Therefore, one of the main goals of therapy or intervention with hormone-positive cancer is to reduce hormonal stimulation as much as possible.

Estrogen Exposure Over Time Is Linked To Breast Cancer

The longer your body is exposed to estrogen throughout your life, the more it appears to increase your risk for estrogen-related breast cancer. This helps explain why most breast cancer diagnoses occur later in life, after a lifetime of exposure to estrogen.

But it gets more interesting. Even though breast cancer risk generally increases as you get older, if you start your period later in life , your risk goes down simply because you had a few extra years without estrogen. The opposite seems true for women who go through menopause later, as more years of estrogen exposure may actually increase the risk for breast cancer.

See the connection? More estrogen equals more risk, according to current research.

Breast Cancer can be devastating and though there are certain genetic factors that cause this silent killer experts are of the opinion that our food intake also impacts various forms of cancer. Heres a list of 5 foods that are known to lower the risk of developing breast cancer:

1. Eggs

This protein-packed food, also provides you Choline which makes women reduce risk to breast cancer. This nutrient is essential for maintaining cell structure and function of all cells in our body. As per experts, women who consume eggs on a daily basis have the lowest risk of breast cancer as compared to the ones who dont.

2. Walnuts

Walnuts contain Gamma Tocopherol a vitamin that inhibits Akt which is an enzyme that aids survival of cancer cells. Moreover, walnuts are rich in Phytosterols that regulate estrogen levels and block Estrogen Receptors , thereby slowing down the growth of breast cancer cells.

3. Cooked Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich in Lycopene, which according to National Cancer Institute, USA, has been found effective against ER-negative tumors. And when tomatoes are cooked their antioxidants are further boosted therefore making cooked tomatoes a must have on a womans diet chart. In several studies women who ate cooked tomatoes were found to be 22% less susceptible to the risks of developing breast cancer.

4. Strawberries/Pomegranates

5. Sweet Potato

People who eat nuts in their adolescence may have a better chance of fighting off breast cancer later in life, according to data from the Harvard Nurses Study. A follow-up study involving the daughters of the nurses corroborated the findings. Those eating more peanut butter, nuts, beans, lentils, soybeans, or corn were found to have just a fraction of the risk for fibrocystic breast disease, which places one at higher risk of cancer. The protective effects were found to be strongest for those most at risk, such as those with a family history of breast cancer.

Another study out of the British Journal of Cancer found that even two handfuls of nuts a week may protect against pancreatic cancer, one of our most fatal malignancies.

Nuts are described as nutritionally precious, which may explain some of the mechanisms by which nut components induce cancer cell death and inhibit cancer growth and spread in vitro. But which nuts work the best? In my video#1 Anticancer Vegetable, we learned that two classes of vegetablesthe broccoli family vegetables and the garlic family vegetablesmost effectively suppressed breast cancer cell growth. In Which Fruit Fights Cancer Better?, cranberries and lemons took the title.

What about nuts? In terms of antioxidant content, walnuts and pecans steal the show. Twenty-five walnuts have the antioxidant equivalent of eight grams of vitamin C .

A High Fiber Diet And Breast Cancer

Adjuvant Hormonal Therapy for Estrogen Receptor Positive Early Stage Breast Cancer – Mayo Clinic

Decreasing the number of fatty foods in your diet and replacing them with whole foods will reduce your risk and have been shown to improve the survival rate of breast cancer patients. One study showed that a low-fat diet reduces the risk of death from breast cancer by 21 percent. Adding fiber and antioxidantsfound in fruit and vegetablesto a diet low in animal fat is optimal for breast health. Women on a high-fiber diet were 8 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, compared to those who ate less fiber. An increase in dietary fiber lowers blood sugar and estrogen levels in the body, which is key to slowing or halting tumor growth.

Fiber-rich foods typically are also high in antioxidants, which are not only important for preventing breast cancer but in treating it as well. Antioxidants contain nutrients that boost your immune system and protect against free radicals, which are molecules that damage tissue and can lead to cancer growth. Antioxidants also block the cancer-causing effects of carcinogens and can help women in remission lower their risk of reoccurrence.

So whether you’re genetically predisposed by having one of the genetic markers, recently diagnosed for the first time, or are recovering from breast cancer treatment, a plant-based diet is known to improve breast health, according to a growing number of recent studies. Here are nine plant-based foods that can help to lower your risk of breast cancer, according to studies.

How Is Breast Cancer Diagnosed

Annual mammograms for women over 40 have been key to successful early detection of breast cancer. However, many cases are found because a woman or her physician feels a lump in the breast that turns out to be cancer. Although monthly breast self-examinations are no longer recommended, all women should be familiar with the way their breasts normally feel so that they can recognize any changes that occur.

The evaluation of a breast mass begins with physical examination of the breasts, armpits, neck and chest area by a physician. If breast cancer is suspected, one or more of the following tests will be recommended:

  • A mammogram to evaluate the breast lump
  • Breast ultrasound to determine whether the lump is solid or fluid-filled
  • An MRI to help better define the breast lump or evaluate an abnormal finding on a mammogram
  • A biopsy to remove cells from the lump for laboratory and microscopic analysis.

When cancer is found, the following additional tests may be needed:

  • A CT and / or bone scan to be sure the cancer has not spread
  • PET scan , an imaging test that uses a radioactive substance to identify areas of cancer that may have been missed by other studies.
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy, a test that involves the surgical removal of a regional lymph node to determine whether the cancer has spread beyond the breast.
